Money Saving Tips For Halloween Costumes

Happy Halloween! This festive holiday has a lot of important elements such as decorating, carving pumpkins, and most of all finding the perfect costume. It seems you might need a big budget to find the perfect costume but there are some tricks to make your costume an absolute treat.

The first thing to do is come up with a concept or idea for your costume. You can be inspired by your favorite TV or movie character (as they tend to have a uniform costume), you can also consider a comic sarcastic costume or even a group costume concept with your friends. Once you have a solid costume concept, you can look for inspiration online to see what you need to complete your costume.
You can purchase a costume online or in-store but can be costly (the more over-the-top, the more expensive) not even mentioning accessories such as shoes, wigs, and makeup. You can save a ton of money on a Halloween costume if you are thrifty, and the best part is your costume will be unique.

Halloween costumes are traditionally worn once and shoved in the back of the closet to never see the light of day which is why you should consider buying a second-hand costume. One year I was looking for a specific costume that wasn’t sold in the store anymore, but I was able to find it on Mercari.
The Mercari app is known for finding some great deals on clothes including costumes in new or used condition. The best part about my find was that it was way cheaper than the store and the seller included a lightly worn matching wig. The costume fit great, and the wig was in good condition to wear, it was also comfortable since it was already broken in as new costumes tend to be tighter.
You can check more second-hand online stores such as eBay, Mercari, Poshmark, OfferUp, and thredUP. If you’re not finding any luck online, you can try creating your own costume.

Thrift and second-hand stores can offer some great finds for costumes with a low price point. Some stores will have costumes but if you want to make your own, you can get a couple of pieces to create a complete outfit. You can also use clothes from thrift or second-hand stores as material to create your own outfit if you have a sewing machine.

Knowing how to sew can save you some major cash for a Halloween costume using materials from a thrift store, second-hand store, or your local craft store. You can choose to modify clothes for your costume or create your own custom creation using a sewing pattern.

Sewing a costume is a fun activity that will save some money finding the perfect Halloween costume and you can tailor it to fit you best. The best part of sewing your own outfit is that there will be no copycats or competition of “who wore it best.”

This is a rare case but some costume stores offer rentals for costumes so you can wear it for the big night and return it. The only thing to watch out for is the cleanliness of the rental costume and making sure you don’t damage the costume with rips or stains. Regardless of how you get or create your Halloween costume, remember to have fun and have a safe celebration.
